Bipolar Disorder Q&A

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that manifests in feelings of both uncontrollable mania and depression. Depressive feelings consist of sadness, lack of interest in relationships or activities, and hopelessness.

Manic episodes, or hypomania (less severe), can result in energized, euphoric, or joyful moods. When experiencing both highs and lows, it can be challenging to connect with friends and family, manage jobs, and stay on a consistent sleep or behavioral cycle.

What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder affects people of all ages, but is often identified in the late teenage years or adults in their early 20s. Symptoms can vary and evolve, but patients are typically diagnosed with a specific type of disorder so that proper treatment can be prescribed.

Bipolar disorder may also be provoked by certain drugs or alcohol combined with a preexisting medical condition, such as Cushing's disease, stroke, or multiple sclerosis.

  • Bipolar I disorder: both manic and depressive emotional swings, and in extreme mania cases, psychosis or the loss of connection with reality
  • Bipolar II disorder: at a minimum, one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode
  • Cyclothymic disorder: at a minimum, two years (less for children and teens) of persistent hypomania and depressive symptoms (considered less extreme than major depression)

Why should I seek treatment for bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder can not only create emotional instability and discomfort for the one suffering, but it may also damage their relationships with friends, family, and coworkers. When left untreated, the disorder can lead to:

  • Suicide or suicide attempts
  • Substance abuse
  • Damaged relationships
  • Poor professional and social interactions

Not getting treated for bipolar disorder can lead to the worsening of preexisting conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, eating disorders, heart disease, headaches, and thyroid problems.

What are the treatment options for bipolar disorder?

The key to managing bipolar disorder is seeking treatment early. Paula has extensive experience in spiritual and holistic approaches, medication, and psychiatric options. Treatment options include:

  • Medications like mood stabilizers, antipsychotic medications, and occasionally antidepressants
  • Self-education and coping skills, such as recognition of an episode and how to manage it
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy or family-focused therapy to support the patient and their loved ones

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of bipolar disorder, there are options for you at Sis Therapy/Already Done LLC. Call the office or request an appointment online today.
