Body Image Q&A

What are body image disorders?

Body image disorders are mental health concerns where you can’t stop thinking about flaws or perceived defects in your appearance.

You might be consumed by your body image or have a distorted view of the way you look, even if it’s a minor imperfection or not noticeable or viewed negatively by other people.

Treatment with Paula at Sis Therapy/Already Done LLC can help you navigate negative thoughts and emotions about your body image.

What are the symptoms of body image disorders?

The following are signs and symptoms of body image disorders:

  • Constantly thinking about perceived appearance flaws
  • Embarrassment or shame about your body
  • Anxiousness
  • Avoiding social situations
  • Intently and consistently focusing on body image
  • Repeatedly looking in the mirror
  • Seeking reassurance from other people
  • Distress over your body image
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Seeking out cosmetic procedures
  • Being extremely occupied with perceived appearance flaws
  • Frequently comparing yourself to others
  • Being a perfectionist
  • Excessive thoughts about your appearance

You might view yourself as carrying extra weight, despite being a normal weight or even underweight. Body image disorders can cause problems at work, school, and in your social life. They might also contribute to anxiety, depression, or similar mental health disorders.

What are the risk factors for body image concerns?

Body image disorder risk factors may include:

  • Family history of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)

Body image disorders may begin in the early teenage years and continue into adulthood. They can lead to low self-esteem, substance misuse, social isolation, and even suicidal thoughts in extreme cases.

How are body image disorders diagnosed?

Paula meets with you or your child virtually. She completes a psychiatric evaluation using DSM-5 criteria to diagnose BDD, anorexia nervosa, or similar body image-related disorders.

How are body image issues treated?

A personalized body image disorder treatment plan may consist of medication management, lifestyle changes, and therapy. You might complete:

  • Individualized therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Couples counseling
  • Pre-adolescent and adolescent therapy
  • Group therapy sessions

It’s helpful to stay active, eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. Manage stress with relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or tai chi.
